Reflections

It was a fun experience doing this project on the history of the typeface Garamond, we had a lot of laughs doing the puppet show together. It also revealed that these digital typefaces we see on the screen actually originated from somewhere on paper first and in Garamond's case, so many years ago in punch cutter's room in France. It is quite amazing how we are still using Garamond till this day. It is also interesting to know how the typeface evolved or inspire new fonts. A slight change in details begins a new typeface. That shows how important the small weight changes or angles in the characters are. I am now more aware of Garamond around me, although it is not the most favorite, I am learning to appreciate its long history and usefulness! Maybe, we will become like Hiro and be font fanatics in the future too!

With so many types of Garamonds in the world now, we see different versions of Garamond's punchcutter typeface and Jean Jannon's typeface.

We found an amazing research of the different Garamonds.

characteristics of garamond

GaramondDesigned by Claude Garamond in 1532

he preeminent French Old Style design exhibits subtle refinements to the Venetian designs with its graceful serifs and delicate weight changes.
  • Counters are generous, with the exception of the lowercase ‘a’ and ‘e’, which are small.
  • Lowercase top serifs are extended, diagonal, and curve to join the main strokes.
  • The Uppercase ‘T’ is unique, with the top left serif slanted and the top right serif straight.
Garamond remains one of the most popular text faces today. It is highly readable, lends a graceful quality to text, and its long ascenders give it a light, airy quality.
